Caring for the environment

Multimedia Australia strives to be one of the most environmentally-aware companies in Australia.

We have always been committed to minimising our impact on the environment. Initiatives we undertake include:

Solar power renewable energy

Solar panelsAt the beginning of 2007 Multimedia Australia became one of the first Australian IT companies to trial the use of solar panels to generate electricity to run a small percentage of its computer equipment.

In fact, part of Multimedia Australia's new flagship application, the Aurora Web Editor, was developed on computer equipment powered by solar electricity.

Multimedia Australia considered the trial to be so successful that it subsequently purchased permanent PV solar power equipment, and as of September 2007, Multimedia Australia is now partially powering its computer equipment from the sun; thereby minimising Multimedia Australia's impact on the environment.

Low-energy-consuming computers

Computers that Multimedia Australia purchases are selected to ensure they require minimal energy to run.

For example, computers used for non-intensive processing tasks such as email support are selected/set up to run at reduced processing power, thereby requiring less electricity to run.

Where practical, Multimedia Australia's computers have always used energy-efficient LCD monitors since the company's inception, even during the time that other IT organisations were still using large numbers of electricity-intensive CRT monitors.

Energy-efficient office lighting

Multimedia Australia's head office uses energy-efficient lighting, and where possible, natural lighting is used during the day.

Standby computer processing power

TreeMany other companies keep their IT equipment running non-stop, even when it is not in use overnight, resulting in large amounts of unnecessary energy being consumed.

At Multimedia Australia, however, we have a policy of either switching off equipment when not in use for prolonged periods of time or setting it up to perform automated processing tasks such as running backups or database updates.

Rechargeable batteries

Companies with photography and film production divisions use large amounts of electricity to power portable equipment. To reduce the impact on the environment, Multimedia Australia uses rechargeable batteries in all its portable equipment. This re-use helps reduce toxic chemicals entering the environment and reduces the power consumption required to recycle large amounts of old batteries.

End-of-life equipment

Multimedia Australia equipment that has reached the end of its commercial operating life is either given away to not-for-profit organisations, sold, or sent away for recycling.

To protect the privacy of our customers, our old hard drives that once contained customer information are erased and then stored.

Recycling

Where possible, Multimedia Australia sends used consumables for recycling, including old printer toner cartridges.

Supporting environmental care initiatives

Multimedia Australia is a proud supporter of environmental care initiatives. Multimedia Australia is also committed to Earth HourTM.
